Those of us who work daily in the field of gift planning become so familiar with bequest files that we tend to become blasé. We imagine the subject of bequests is so simple, so obvious that we really don’t need to learn more about it. We travel to conferences and spend hours trying to figure out, often with calculators in hand, the intricacies of more complex gift planning instruments.
Naturally
we are all seeking to capture our charity’s share of the intergenerational
transfer of wealth. However bequests still account for over 85% of all
planned gifts in North America. Yet many of us don’t even know the origin
of the word “bequest.”
